Before approaching sexual health
education, it is important to take time to reflect on the following:
-
What are the needs and concerns
specific to your students?
-
What outcomes were the students to
have learned prior to this year?
-
What outcomes does the curriculum
expect you to cover this year?
Using the following chart should help
you to ensure that the planning you do will meet the needs of your
students.
Examining the needs and concerns
specific to your students:
| Step One |
Step Two |
Step Three |
Contact parents,
inviting them to learn about the learning outcomes that
will be covered this year. Provide parents with an opportunity to
identify needs and concerns they have. |
Inform your students
that they will soon be learning about sexual health. Outline the
learning outcomes that will be covered this year. Ask your
students to provide you with questions and concerns they have
regarding these outcomes. |
Talk
to various staff members in your school (such as the guidance
counselor, resource teacher or administrator) to discuss what you
will be teaching and to identify any students who might have
special needs. Together with these staff members, ensure supports
are in place for any student who requires help as a result of
learning about sexual health. |
Examining the curriculum outcomes the
students have learned prior to this year:
| Step One |
Step Two |
Step Three |
| Examine the Alberta
Education Program of Studies, focusing on the outcomes that are to
have been met in years prior to the one you are planning for. |
Meet
with teachers on staff who taught sexual health in previous years.
Discuss what was taught. |
Identify gaps
between the new program of studies and the teaching done prior to
this year. If material has been missed and it could affect the
students ability to learn this year's outcomes, plan activities
that address the gaps you identified. |
Examine the curriculum outcomes you
are expected to cover this year:
| Step One |
Step Two |
Step Three |
| Examine
the Alberta Education Program of Studies, focusing on this
year's learning outcomes. |
Meet
with teachers on staff currently teaching sexual health to develop
a coordinated approach that ensures students have studied the
required outcomes. |
